I Was Interviewed for a Documentary, and the Importance of Local Economy

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The Recess Ends12th and Lamar in Austin is a strange nexus point in the universe, much the way that the Red Rocks of Sedona, AZ is a portal to a different time and place. The cosmic strings weave deeply there.

And just a week ago, those intangible forces showed their glowing heads for a visit once again.

Nexus Occurance #1:
I had come to tell my friend Carissa at Flora & Fauna that I would accept her offer of the office space in the back (I know it’s huge news, and it deserves it’s own post), and when I showed up Adrianne Clay from An Affair To Remember Catering. Adrianne is a well respected person in the wedding industry here in Austin, and I have been told many times that I should make contact with her. As it turns out, Carissa is very good friends with her. I gave her one of my marketing booklets and was persuaded by her charm to give her 4 more (I’m running out now – haha). We hit it off, and she liked my work. Yay!!!

Nexus Occurance #2:
As Carissa, Adrianne and I sat out on the patio on a very unusually warm winter day, two guys with video equipment  entertained Carissa’s son next door at House Park BBQ, which is not unusual, he makes friends with everyone. As interest wore off the two guys came over and started talking to us, told us that they were visiting 50 states and filming a documentary on the recession. And thus we were introduced to Austin and Brian Chu from The Recess Ends, and we found ourselves in the middle of a impromptu interview on the recession, how Austin’s local business-centric model has padded the economy here, and how-if-at-all the recession will hit when it does here.

Here are a couple strong points that came out of that interview:

  • Austin’s local economy has not been hit as bad as around the nation because of movements like Keep Austin Weird, which encourages shopping at locally run businesses instead of chain superstores.
  • Because of that movement, more money stays within the community.
  • Nothing exists in a vacuum however and Austin will at some point become susceptible to the recession
  • The slow down that we have experienced, is more than likely due to people buying into the national media coverage on the state of the economy.

The Chu brothers have a long road ahead of them until they finish their trip sometime around May, and then there will be an extensive, many months long, editing process to make a movie. I wish them all the best, and hopefully Carissa, Adrianne and I will be in a feature documentary sometime next year!

Only on 12th & Lamar…

Safe travels guys!

Grace Ormonde Submission and the Odds of Getting Published

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Grace Ormonde - Wedding StyleI just sent off a beautiful wedding I shot in October off to the always sexy and glamorous Grace Ormonde – Wedding Style for review and possible acceptance for the Fall issue!!!

I found out the submission requirements a couple weeks ago and have been frantically preparing it for the March 1st deadline.
And, I finally dropped it off at the customer service black hole, called the downtown FedEx today!

As far as my odds of getting published in Wedding Style, I figure there will be about 1,500 other photographers submitting, and we’re all vying for the 6 Featured Wedding spots, So that means I’ve got a 1 in 250 chance of getting in. Alright!!!

Based off of those odds, I have a better chance with Grace Ormonde than:
Being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1
Scoring a hole in one in golf: 5,000 to 1
Dating a supermodel: 88,000 to 1
Dying from a mountain lion attack in California: 32,000,000 to 1
Having a meteor land on your house: 182,138,880,000,000 to 1
Being considered possessed by Satan: 7,000 to 1

And that stuff happens ALL THE TIME!!!

Cross your fingers and wish me luck.

In at the Driskill

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

These past few weeks have really been busy. I’ve been working my butt off trying to meet with wedding coordinators and wedding locations, all in an effort to get my name out there and become more and more well know in Austin.

Well, I finally cracked one that I had been trying for months. I met with Emily Taylor, the event coordinator at the Driskill Hotel. The Driskill is one of the premiere locations for weddings here in Austin, so I was very excited to meet someone there and start a relationship. Emily was really gracious with her time, she looked at my work, I was delighted that she was impressed. She then took me on the tour to show me all the wedding venues in the hotel (yes, more than one!).

The Driskill has a long history in Austin that goes back to 1886! The floors are super shiny marble, the coffered ceilings are held up with tall, elegant columns. One of my favorite rooms in the whole place was a richly colored and broody bank room which is right on the corner of Sixth and Brazos. Perfect for that last exiting shot of any wedding.

In a town where there are not many beautiful Catholic churches, I was rather transfixed at the level of detail and extravagance at the Driskill. It made me want to shoot a wedding there even more.

Hopefully I will very soon.

I Was Kicked Out Of The Tribeza Bridal Show!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

It’s amazing that in this day and age of openness and businesses helping other like businesses grow, that there still exists an underlying current of jealousy, and pettiness.

I was asked by my good friend, Carissa Hoop at Flora & Fauna, to take pictures of her floral arrangements at the Tribeza Bridal Show at the very nice Stephen F. Austin Intercontinental Hotel. I spent about an hour or so taking pictures of Carissa’s super cool Pavé ball flower arrangements, I grabbed a model, from Ann Kelso Salon, named April, who was wearing a fabulous dress from Alexia Gavela, and took some shots of her holding a bouquet, and even got some shots of some tasty cupcakes at The Cupcake Bar.

After I was done shooting I decided to go around and meet some of the other photographers. I met the delightful couple behind Forever Photography, and saw my new friend Svetlana Frolova from Svetlana Photography.

As I met people there were a couple requests to see my Leather Craftsmen albums. So, when I went down to drop off my camera equipment, I grabbed my two sample albums and started to show those that were interested. Bear in mind, I was not trolling for brides… I totally respect the fact that people paid for their booth, and I was only showing vendors my albums.

At one point some little munchkin, from the magazine, harboring a Napoleon complex walks up and says that I’m going to have to leave, because vendors are complaining. I tell him that I brought it up on request from a couple of the vendors, and I wasn’t talking to any of the brides. He then puts his hand on my shoulder in an effort to usher me out. I politely back away, and say goodbye to Carissa, and leave.

Talk about rediculous.

But, I look at it as a good thing. The more publicity I have means the more visible I am. And how many people can say they’ve been kicked out of a bridal show, or made it onto the Tribeza list of banditos? I need some controversy to make it big.

This is going to be a great year!
